Meaning
Al-Jāzī is understood from jazā — the root j-z-y (ج-ز-ي), to requite, to repay what is owed. *Al-jāzī* is the active participle of that verb: the one who repays. Ibn Manẓūr notes that the verb runs in both directions — recompense for a good turn and requital for a harm — and that *jazāʾ* is the noun for either; the name carries the favourable side of it.
A Najdī form
The classical feminine of the participle is *al-Jāziya*, with the tāʾ marbūṭa. Peninsular usage carries the name as al-Jāzī without it, the same regional habit of form that gives Mūḍī and Nūf their shapes. The old dictionaries record the root and the participle but do not list the name as a name — where a name is regional in form, this reference gives the root it is understood from rather than claiming an attestation it does not have.
The article
The *al-* here belongs to the name itself, not to a separate definite article that could be dropped — the same small pattern as al-Jawhara and al-ʿAnūd.
jazā and ajzaʾa
The lexicographers keep apart two verbs that modern spelling runs together. *Jazā ʿanhu*, without hamza, is to stand in another's place and answer for him; *ajzaʾa ʿanhu*, with hamza, is to suffice him. Ibn Manẓūr states the difference plainly — *hādhā yujziʾu ʿanka*, with the hamza, is 'this is enough for you', and *yajzī ʿanka*, without it, is not the same word. The name belongs to the first: requital, not sufficiency.
Frequently asked questions
Are Aljazi and al-Jaziya the same name?
Yes — one participle in two shapes. Al-Jāziya is the classical feminine with the tāʾ; al-Jāzī is the Peninsular form without it.
Is the name related to ajzaʾa, 'to suffice'?
No. The dictionaries separate them: jazā without hamza is to requite and to answer for someone; ajzaʾa with hamza is to be enough. The name is from the first.
