Meaning
A *dāna* is a pearl of the largest and finest grade. The word came into Gulf Arabic from Persian *dāna* ('grain, bead') along the same trade routes that carried the pearls themselves.
A working word
This is vocabulary from the trade, not from poetry. Pearling had a precise grading language — size, roundness, lustre and colour each had terms — because a boat's whole season came down to how its catch was graded. *Dāna* was the top of it.
As a name
Widespread across the Gulf and among the most characteristic female names of the coast.
