Meaning and root
From ṭ-l-l (ط-ل-ل). *Ṭall* is the lightest rain — dew that settles rather than falls. From the same root comes the sense of a face that is pleasing to look on.
In poetry
The root also gives *ṭalal*: the traces of an abandoned camp. Standing over the *aṭlāl* and remembering who lived there opens more classical Arabic poems than any other device — a genre built entirely on absence and lineage.
