Overview

Jāzān lies on the Tihāma coast in the far southwest, the hot lowland strip between the Red Sea and the mountains of ʿAsīr. Offshore lie the Farasān islands.

Character

It is one of the wettest and most agricultural corners of the Peninsula — millet and tropical fruit rather than dates — and its architecture, with round thatched dwellings in the coastal villages, belongs to the Red Sea world rather than the Najdī interior.

Position

South of it the coast continues into Yemen and the Tihāma of Zabīd; the same lowland runs the length of both.
