A family name (nisba) attributed to the Ansar of Medina — the tribes of Aws and Khazraj.

Type
Collective nisba
Attributed to
The Ansar of Medina (Aws and Khazraj)

Overview

Al-Ansari (al-Anṣārī) is the nisba of the Ansar — the Muslims of Medina from the tribes of Aws and Khazraj who sheltered the Prophet after the Hijra. It is one of the most widespread nisbas in the Muslim world, borne by families from Arabia to India and beyond.

Note

Because the Ansar comprised many clans of Aws and Khazraj, this nisba is a collective attribution, not a single line. Bearing it does not by itself establish a specific descent; families should verify their own documented lineage.
