Overview
Al-Azimi (al-ʿĀzimī) is the nisba of al-ʿAwāzim, recorded in Kuwait and along the northern Gulf coast and associated there with pearling and the sea trade as much as with the desert. Where they belong in the wider genealogies is reported differently by different sources, and this reference does not choose between them.
Form of the name
The nisba is built on the singular ʿĀzim, not on the plural ʿAwāzim — Arabic regularly forms a nisba from the singular of a plural tribal name. Al-Manṣūrī from al-Manāṣīr and al-Shiḥḥī from al-Shiḥūḥ are formed the same way. In Lisān al-ʿArab ʿazm is resolve: the heart settled on a course and carried through.
Bearing the name
Two families recorded under this nisba are not shown to be related by that alone. Where the sources differ over the tribe's own affiliation, nothing but a family's documented record settles its line.
