Overview

Al-Khayyat (al-Khayyāṭ) is built on kh-y-ṭ. In Lisān al-ʿArab the khayṭ is the thread, khāṭa al-thawb khiyāṭatan is to sew it, the mikhyaṭ and the khiyāṭ are names of the needle, and the khayyāṭ is the man whose craft is sewing. The faʿʿāl pattern is the ordinary Arabic form for a craft practised habitually, which is why so many trade names take it. As a family name it records an ancestor known by that craft, and nothing more.

Sewing is not weaving

The tailor's work begins where the weaver's ends. Kh-y-ṭ is the thread drawn through cloth already made; ḥ-w-k (al-Ḥāʾik) and n-s-j (al-Nassāj) are the interlacing of warp and weft that makes the cloth in the first place. Modern readers treat the three as one clothing trade; the lexicon does not, and a family named for one of them is not named for the others. Ibn Khaldūn counts tailoring among the crafts that appear with settled life and with cut and fitted clothing.

Bearing the name

An occupational or toponymic family name records what an ancestor did or where he was from, as the name was applied to him — not a lineage. It attaches to no tribe, and two families bearing it need have no connection to one another beyond the word itself.
