Overview
Al-Najdi (al-Najdī) is the nisba to Najd. The word is from n-j-d: in Lisān al-ʿArab najd is raised, hard ground, the opposite of ghawr, low ground, and it is a common noun with a plural — nijād, anjud, nujūd. The region's name is that common noun made definite, and Yāqūt records more than one place called by it.
Where the geographers put it
Najd in the classical books is defined by what it is not: it is what rises above Tihāma and stops short of the Iraqi lands and of the Yamāma in some accounts, and because it is fixed against its neighbours rather than by a line, its extent moves with the author. Towns counted Najdī in one geographer fall outside in another. The administrative Najd a modern reader has in mind is a further thing again, and the family name is older than it.
Names easily confused
The same root carries najda — courage, and the giving of help to one who calls — and the lexicon uses najd of a man of that quality. A byname on that sense is possible and is written exactly like the place-name. Beyond that, a nisba to any of the lesser places called Najd is indistinguishable in writing from a nisba to the region.
Bearing the name
A toponymic family name records a place an ancestor was attributed to — born there, settled there, known by it — as the name was applied to him, not a lineage. It attaches to no tribe, and two families bearing it need have no connection to one another beyond the place itself.
