Overview
Al-Shaybani (al-Shaybānī) is attributed to Shaybān, a section of Bakr ibn Wāʾil often named in the chronicles, recorded from eastern Arabia up into al-Jazīra and the Iraqi marches. Shayb in Lisān al-ʿArab is the whitening of the hair, and both Shaybān and Shayba are personal names formed from it.
Names easily confused
Three things sit close together here. The first is Shaybān of Bakr, which is usually what is meant; but the genealogists record the name Shaybān in more than one line, and the careful books name the father before they let the nisba stand, because which Shaybān is intended is a question the nisba alone does not answer. The second is al-Shaybī, a separate name built on Shayba and not on Shaybān; the two differ by a single letter and are regularly merged in modern registers. The third is that Shaybān is an ordinary personal name from a plain root, so a family called after such a forebear carries the nisba with no reference to Bakr in it.
Bearing the name
A tribal nisba records what a family is called, not who its ancestors were. It may follow descent (ṣarīḥ), alliance (ḥilf) or clientage (walāʾ), and only a family's own documented record tells those apart.
