Overview
Naṣr ibn Muʿāwiya ibn Bakr ibn Hawāzin is recorded as the largest of the Hawāzinī bodies, with Jusham ibn Muʿāwiya beside it in the same chain. Its diyār are given in the high country around al-Ṭāʾif and eastward toward Najd — the ground of Awṭās and Ḥunayn, where the Hawāzinī muster of the year 8 AH took place and where the sources locate the tribe most often. Thaqīf, seated at al-Ṭāʾif itself, is reckoned by many of the genealogists to Hawāzin as well, but the sources differ over that connection and some keep Thaqīf apart from it entirely — one of the plainer cases of the disagreement that runs through the whole scheme. This page describes a historical tribe and makes no statement about any modern family.
On lineage
Branch lists and affiliations here are given as reported by the classical genealogists, who themselves disagree. Nothing on this page establishes any living family's descent: a shared name may reflect descent, alliance (ḥilf) or clientage (walāʾ), and the sources usually say which only when they know.
Frequently asked questions
Is Thaqīf part of Hawāzin?
Many genealogists reckon it there, others keep it apart. The sources differ, and this reference reports the disagreement rather than settling it.
