Overview
Tūmān — written تومان, and vowelled differently by different reporters — is named among the sections of Shammar, its country placed in the mountain country of northern Najd and the open desert running toward Iraq. That, with the caveats below, is the whole of what this page asserts. It describes a historical section as reported, and makes no claim about any modern family.
The name is not explained here
None of the six classical works this reference cites contains the name, so there is no lexical entry to point to and no genealogist's account to report. Writers have connected the shape تومان with words of non-Arabic origin current in the later centuries, and the connection may be right; but it rests on no source this reference is permitted to use, and a derivation offered in a reference work is copied long after the hesitation that produced it has been forgotten. So the entry here is a blank, deliberately: the meaning and the origin of the name are not established, and the vowelling reaches us through report rather than through a written classical text, which is why the spelling is given without a settled reading.
On sources
The classical works this reference cites do not document Tūmān. They are all earlier than the arrangement of Shammar in which the name appears, and none of them lists that tribe's sections. What is reported about Tūmān comes from oral tradition and from modern writing outside the permitted sources. Yāqūt may be cited for the country of northern Najd and the desert toward Iraq — the place, not the section — and that is the extent of what is citable here. The page records a name, and no descent.
On lineage
Branch lists and affiliations here are given as reported, and the genealogists differ among themselves. Nothing on this page establishes any living family's descent: a shared name may reflect descent, alliance (ḥilf) or clientage (walāʾ), and the sources usually say which only when they know.
Frequently asked questions
What does the name Tūmān mean?
This reference does not say. The name is in none of the six classical works it cites, and derivations offered elsewhere rest on sources outside its policy. An honest blank is preferred to a plausible guess that would then be copied.
