Meaning and root
From r-sh-d (ر-ش-د), soundness of judgement and right direction. *Rushd* is the opposite of *ghayy*, going astray.
Legal sense
The root also carries a technical meaning: *rushd* is the maturity at which a person may manage their own property — so *rāshid* is 'of age, competent' as well as 'rightly guided'.
Related
Hudā comes from a different root with a close sense: guidance received, where *rushd* leans toward judgement exercised.
