- Root
- r-sh-d, right guidance
Overview
Al-Rashidi (al-Rashidi) is the nisba of the personal name Rashid, from the root r-sh-d, right guidance and soundness of judgement, as Lisan al-Arab gives it. Rashid was among the commonest of Arab given names, and that fact alone is enough to produce identical nisbas in places with no connection between them. This page exists mainly to say so.
Attributions the sources keep apart
Some bearers are attributed to Bani Rashid, recorded in the northern Hijaz in the country between Medina and the coast and most often reckoned to Harb — as reported, not as established. Others are attributed to al-Rashayidah, recorded in the northern Hijaz and along the Red Sea, whose own nisba is more often written al-Rashaydi. Many families carry the name from the given name of an ancestor, with no tribal attribution behind it at all. The sources keep these apart, and one may not be reduced to another on the strength of a shared nisba.
Note
A shared nisba is not proof of shared descent, and where a name is as common as this one independent origin is the expectation rather than the exception. A name may enter a family by descent (ṣariḥ), by alliance (ḥilf) or by clientage (walaʾ).
