Overview
Al-Qaṭīf is a coastal oasis on the Gulf: springs, dense date groves and a shoreline that supported both farming and pearling.
The name
From q-ṭ-f (ق-ط-ف), 'to pluck, to harvest' — the plucking of fruit, which is what the place is for.
Antiquity
The oasis is very old, named in the pre-Islamic geography of eastern Arabia and continuously settled since. With neighbouring al-Aḥsāʾ it forms the historic agricultural core of the eastern coast, long before oil moved the region's centre of gravity to Dammām.
Frequently asked questions
What does al-Qaṭīf mean?
From the root q-ṭ-f, 'to pluck or harvest' — a name for the gathering of fruit, fitting for an oasis of date groves.
