The place
Yabrīn is first of all a watering place: an oasis of palms and wells south of al-Aḥsāʾ, on the northern edge of the great sands. Yāqūt records it as a place of water and date palms, standing where the settled country gives out.
The sands
What the name mostly does in Arabic, though, is name the desert beyond it. Rimāl Yabrīn — the sands of Yabrīn — is the classical way of saying what is now called the Rubʿ al-Khālī, and it is the phrase a reader meets in the geographers where a modern map would print the later name. The sands became proverbial for the uncountable: to say a thing was more than the sands of Yabrīn was to say it could not be numbered.
The name itself
The sources do not settle where the name comes from. It is used as a proper name of the place and nothing more is claimed for it here — where the lexicographers offer no derivation, this reference does not invent one.
Reading a classical source
The practical point for family research is one of translation between eras. A tribe described in an old source as ranging at the sands of Yabrīn is being placed in the country now called the Rubʿ al-Khālī; the northern and eastern margins of those sands are recorded as the range of Āl Murrah, which is a record of where a group moved and watered, not a statement of descent. Al-Aḥqāf, the other classical name used of this desert, refers rather to its southern reaches. Neither name is a territory with a boundary — both name sand, and the diyār recorded within it are ranges and wells, not borders.
