Al-Aḥqāf
The southern sands of Arabia as the classical geographers named them — curving dunes toward Ḥaḍramawt and Mahrah, not a bounded territory.
- Type
- Sand region
- Name means
- Curving dunes (root ḥ-q-f)
- Placed by the sources
- The southern sands, toward Ḥaḍramawt, Mahrah and Oman
- Note
- Not simply another name for the Rubʿ al-Khālī
The name
A ḥiqf is a bent dune: sand that has piled and leaned over, curved along its crest. Aḥqāf is its plural, so the name means simply 'the curving dunes'. It describes a landscape, not a settlement — which is why it cannot be pinned to a point on a map, and why the sources that use it are describing country rather than drawing a border.
Where the sources place it
Yāqūt puts the Aḥqāf in the sands of the south, in the direction of Ḥaḍramawt and the country of Mahrah, toward Oman; al-Hamdānī describes the same belt of sand from the Yemeni side. They do not agree on how far it extends, and none of them fixes an edge. A stretch of dunes is being named, and that is all.
And the Empty Quarter
Modern writing often treats al-Aḥqāf and the Rubʿ al-Khālī as two names for one desert. Both halves of that need care. The Rubʿ al-Khālī is itself a recent name — the classical name for the great sands is the sands of Yabrīn — and where the older sources distinguish within them, al-Aḥqāf points to the southern reaches rather than to the whole. So a classical source that places something 'in the Aḥqāf' is pointing nearer Ḥaḍramawt and Mahrah than al-Aḥsāʾ.
In tradition
The Aḥqāf are also named in the transmitted accounts as the dwellings of ʿĀd, one of the peoples the genealogists class among the bāʾida — those held to have left no line to trace. Those are narrative accounts, not documentation, and nothing in them bears on the descent of any living family.
Frequently asked questions
Are al-Aḥqāf and the Rubʿ al-Khālī the same place?
Not exactly. 'Rubʿ al-Khālī' is a recent name; the classical name for the great sands is the sands of Yabrīn, and where the older sources distinguish within them, al-Aḥqāf is their southern part, toward Ḥaḍramawt and Mahrah.
