Overview
Al-Anki (al-ʿAnakī) is the nisba to ʿAnak, a village of the al-Qaṭīf district on the shore the geographers call al-Khaṭṭ. The form is a plain toponymic: the name of the place with the nisba ending, saying that an ancestor was attributed to it.
On sources
The classical works this reference is permitted to cite do not record ʿAnak. Yāqūt names many places on this coast and does not name this one. The page therefore records the name and the country and constructs no history for either.
A short name, easily confused
The name is three letters, and three-letter names are the ones that travel worst. Written without vowels it can be read more than one way, and in an unpointed or hurried hand it sits close to other short names of this coast and of the country behind it. Older texts that do carry a similar form cannot be assumed to mean this village. The lexicons enter senses under the root ʿ-n-k — among them ground of heaped and reddish sand — but they do not connect any of them to this place, and no derivation is asserted for it here.
Bearing the name
A toponymic family name records a place an ancestor was attributed to — born there, settled there, known by it — as the name was applied to him, not a lineage. It attaches to no tribe, and two families bearing it need have no connection to one another beyond the place itself.
