Al-Fallah

An occupational family name from f-l-ḥ: the lexicon's falḥ is splitting the earth for tilling, and the fallāḥ is the cultivator. The same root gives al-falāḥ, success and continuance in good, and the family name sits on the first sense, not the second.

The word

Al-Fallah (al-fallāḥ) is the faʿʿāl of f-l-ḥ. Lisān al-ʿArab gives al-falḥ as splitting and cutting, and falaḥa al-arḍ as splitting the ground to till it; the fallāḥ is the one who works the soil, the akkār or ploughman. The saying the lexicon records, "iron is split by iron" (inna al-ḥadīd bi-l-ḥadīd yuflaḥ), keeps the root's plain sense of cleaving. Ibn Khaldūn treats al-filāḥa, cultivation, as a craft, counts it the oldest of the crafts, and gives its fruit as grain and the staples of life.

Tilling and success

The same letters carry a second sense, and in the lexicon it stands beside the first: al-falāḥ and al-falaḥ are success, winning through, and continuance in good — the word of the call ḥayya ʿalā al-falāḥ. The family name, though, is the pattern of a trade and sits on the first sense: an ancestor called al-fallāḥ tilled the ground. The name records his work, not his fortune. In an oasis such as al-Qaṭīf's, the cultivator's name stands beside the diver's and the palm-weaver's.

Bearing the name

An occupational family name records what an ancestor did, as the name was applied to him — not a lineage. It attaches to no tribe, and two families bearing it need have no connection to one another beyond the word itself.
