Al-Ghanawi

A family name (nisba) to Ghanī of Qays ʿAylān; the classical nisba to Ghanī is al-Ghanawī, with the yāʾ turned to wāw, which is what separates it from forms built on the ordinary adjective ghaniyy.

Overview

Al-Ghanawi (al-Ghanawī) is the nisba of Ghanī ibn Aʿṣur, reckoned by the genealogists to Qays ʿAylān under Muḍar, with a remembered range in Najd; Bāhila is placed beside it under the same parent, so al-Bāhilī is its sister nisba at the same tier. The root gh-n-y is in Lisān al-ʿArab sufficiency and having no need — ghinā, and the maghnā, the place where people dwelt and had their sufficiency — and the tribal name is a proper name of that root, not the adjective.

Names easily confused

The whole difference here is the vowelling, which modern writing does not carry. The classical nisba to a name of the shape Ghanī is al-Ghanawī: the final yāʾ is turned to wāw, exactly as the grammarians require. So al-Ghanawī is the form that attributes to the tribe, while al-Ghanī or al-Ghaniyy, left as article-plus-adjective, is a family name built on the ordinary word for one free of need and attributes to nothing tribal at all. Al-Ghannawī, doubled, and al-Ghanāʾī are further formations again on different bases, and in unvowelled script all of these are near-identical shapes that a register will merge unless it is careful. Only a source that vocalises, or a line of transmission that names Ghanī ibn Aʿṣur, settles which is in front of you.

Bearing the name

A tribal nisba records what a family is called, not who its ancestors were. It may follow descent (ṣarīḥ), alliance (ḥilf) or clientage (walāʾ), and only a family's own documented record tells those apart.
