Al-Ghassani

A family name (nisba) to Ghassān — a name the genealogists say is a water's and not an ancestor's, so the form reports a group that took a water's name rather than a father.

Overview

Al-Ghassani (al-Ghassānī) is the nisba of Ghassān, and the first thing the genealogists say about the name is that it is not an ancestor's. They report a water called Ghassān, and that those of al-Azd who came down upon it and drank of it were called after it; where the water lay they dispute, some placing it at al-Mushallal near al-Juḥfa and others in Yemen. The line underneath the name, as reported, is Azd under the Kahlān branch, and the group is recorded on the Syrian frontier.

Names easily confused

The distinction to hold is between a name and a filiation. Because Ghassān is a water, al-Ghassānī is a group-name, and the nisba that names the line beneath it is al-Azdī. A family bearing the form is attributing itself to those who took that water's name — not to a man called Ghassān, of whom the sources know none.

The second point is about what later writing attaches to the name. The form appears in historical narrative about the Syrian frontier and about rule there; that association belongs to political history, and no dynasty, house or ruler is named or traced on this page. The nisba as a form establishes no connection with any of it, and a claim of that kind rests on a family's own documented record and nowhere else.

Third, the name travelled west, and al-Ghassānī is met in Egyptian and Maghribi records as a name in circulation rather than as a documented line.

Bearing the name

A tribal nisba records what a family is called, not who its ancestors were. It may follow descent (ṣarīḥ), alliance (ḥilf) or clientage (walāʾ), and only a family's own documented record tells those apart.
