Overview
Al-Azd is among the largest groupings the sources reckon to Kahlān. Its branches are recorded across a very wide area: Oman, where Azdī settlement is long established, and the Sarāt highlands, where Ghāmid and Zahrān are reckoned to it. Because the name covers so much ground, an Azdī attribution says less on its own than a narrower one.
On lineage
Branch lists and affiliations here are given as reported by the classical genealogists, who themselves disagree. Nothing on this page establishes any living family's descent: a shared name may reflect descent, alliance (ḥilf) or clientage (walāʾ), and the sources usually say which only when they know.
Frequently asked questions
How wide is the Azd attribution?
Very wide — the sources record Azdī branches from Oman to the Sarāt, so the name alone is less informative than a narrower attribution.
