Overview

Al-Hamdani (al-Hamdānī) is the nisba of the great Yemeni confederation of Hamdan, attested for many early narrators and scholars — most famously al-Hasan al-Hamdani (d. c. 334 AH), author of 'The Description of Arabia' and 'al-Iklīl' on the genealogies of Yemen.

Note

The nisba to the Iranian city of Hamadhān (al-Hamadhānī, with dhāl) is a different name often confused with it. Bearing a tribal nisba does not by itself establish a specific descent; families should verify their own documented lineage.
