Al-Hammami
A family name met in the al-Qaṭīf district, taken from Umm al-Ḥamām — the nisba to a compound name of that shape being built on its second element. The same written form is reached from ḥamām, doves, and from ḥammām, a bath.

Overview
Al-Hammami is met in the al-Qaṭīf district, where it is taken from Umm al-Ḥamām, a settlement of that country. Arabic does not build a nisba on a compound of this shape as a whole: the first element drops and the adjective is formed on the second, so Umm al-Ḥamām gives al-Ḥamāmī. That is a regular process and not peculiar to this name.
Three readings of one spelling
The form is ambiguous in Arabic in a way it is not in English. Ḥamām in Lisān al-ʿArab is the dove and its kind, and a place called Umm al-Ḥamām is readable as ground the birds were known at. Ḥammām, with the doubled mīm, is the bath-house, from ḥ-m-m, heat, and a nisba on that word is occupational rather than toponymic. The two are distinguished in speech by the shadda and are commonly written without it, so the page cannot be told which is meant from the spelling. A third route is a nisba to any other place whose name contains the same word.
On sources
The classical works this reference is permitted to cite do not document Umm al-Ḥamām. The words are documented in the lexicon; the settlement is not, and no history is constructed for it here.
Bearing the name
A toponymic family name records a place an ancestor was attributed to — born there, settled there, known by it — as the name was applied to him, not a lineage. It attaches to no tribe, and two families bearing it need have no connection to one another beyond the word itself.
