Al-Jishi

Overview

Al-Jishi (al-Jishshī) is taken as the nisba to al-Jish, a settlement of the district of al-Qaṭīf on the coast the geographers call al-Khaṭṭ. The root is j-sh-sh: Lisān al-ʿArab gives jashsha al-ḥabb, to grind grain coarsely, and jashīsh for grain so ground, and separately al-jushsh for rising or rough ground.

An ordinary word

Both senses are the kind of word that names places freely, and a name of this shape occurs in more than one part of the Arabic lands. A family name built on it therefore cannot be tied to this coast by its form alone: it may be a nisba to a different Jish altogether, or a byname from the sense of the ground, or from the trade of grinding. Only a source naming the place settles it.

On sources

The lexical content is from Lisān al-ʿArab. The classical geography this reference cites does not carry al-Jish of the al-Qaṭīf district as an entry under that name, so this page records the name and the district and does not construct a history for it.

Bearing the name

A toponymic family name records a place an ancestor was attributed to — born there, settled there, known by it — as the name was applied to him, not a lineage. It attaches to no tribe, and two families bearing it need have no connection to one another beyond the place itself.
