Overview

Al-Khabāqī is the nisba to al-Khabāqa, a locality of the al-Qaṭīf oasis on the coast the geographers call al-Khaṭṭ. The form is a plain toponymic: the ending is added to the place-name and nothing else is done to it.

What is not known

This page is deliberately thin, and the thinness is the information. The vowelling of the base is not fixed by any source available here, so the nisba's own vowelling is unfixed with it. The derivation of the base is not settled either. Ibn Manẓūr does carry a root kh-b-q — *khibiqq* of a swift horse, *al-khibaqqā* of a manner of running — and that entry is recorded here so a reader who looks up the letters finds what the lexicon actually holds; but nothing in the permitted sources ties that root to this place-name, and a sense belonging to horses and gait is not an obvious source for the name of ground. This reference therefore leaves the derivation open rather than picking one.

On sources

The classical works this reference is permitted to cite do not document the locality, and they say nothing about a family name taken from it. No founder, no date and no account of the name is supplied here, because none is available. What the page records is that the name is a nisba to a place of the Qaṭīf oasis, and that the rest is not established.

Bearing the name

A toponymic family name records a place an ancestor was attributed to — born there, settled there, known by it — as the name was applied to him, not a lineage. It attaches to no tribe, and two families bearing it need have no connection to one another beyond the word itself.
