Overview
Al-Kuwaykibī is the nisba to al-Kuwaykib, a locality of the al-Qaṭīf oasis on the coast the geographers call al-Khaṭṭ. The nisba is formed on the diminutive as it stands, not on the base word: a man of this place is *al-Kuwaykibī*, not *al-Kawkabī*, and the two are different names on the page.
The word
Ibn Manẓūr enters *kawkab* under k-w-k-b: the star; and by extension the greater part or bulk of a thing, *kawkab al-māʾ* being the main body of water; the blossom of a meadow; the glitter of iron; and the fierce heart of the summer heat. *Al-kuwaykib* is its diminutive on the pattern *fuʿayʿil*. The diminutive is a formal habit of Arabian place-naming and says nothing about the size or standing of what it names.
What the nisba can and cannot show
Because the base is an ordinary noun, the form is not sealed to one place: ground called by a diminutive of *kawkab* need not be unique, and a bare occurrence of the nisba in a text is not by itself proof of origin in the locality of this oasis. Neither can the name be read backwards into an ancestry — it reports where someone was from, at most.
On sources
The classical works this reference is permitted to cite do not document the locality of the Qaṭīf oasis called al-Kuwaykib. The lexical entry for *kawkab* and the diminutive pattern are documented; the place is not, and this page constructs no history, no founder and no date for the name.
Bearing the name
A toponymic family name records a place an ancestor was attributed to — born there, settled there, known by it — as the name was applied to him, not a lineage. It attaches to no tribe, and two families bearing it need have no connection to one another beyond the word itself.
