Al-Lukayzi
A family name (nisba) to Lukayz, the section of Abd al-Qays the genealogists carry on the eastern coast. It is narrower than al-Abdi and therefore says more.

Overview
Al-Lukayzi (al-Lukayzī) is the nisba to Lukayz, whom Ibn Ḥazm carries within ʿAbd al-Qays as one of its principal divisions, the tribe itself being reckoned under Rabīʿa and remembered on the eastern coast. Because the name belongs to a section rather than to the tribe as a whole, a source that gives this nisba is saying more than one giving al-ʿAbdī, which covers the whole of ʿAbd al-Qays and much besides.
The name
Lukayz is a diminutive form, of the shape Arabic uses freely for personal names, and it is not a common noun with a familiar sense standing behind it in the way that Shann or Muḥārib are. That relative rarity is a useful property: the form is unlikely to have arisen independently as a byname, so where it is met it is more likely to mean the section than a chance homonym. It remains a nisba, not a proof.
Bearing the name
A tribal nisba records what a family is called, not who its ancestors were. It may follow descent (ṣarīḥ), alliance (ḥilf) or clientage (walāʾ), and only a family's own documented record tells those apart.
