Al-Safwani

A family name (nisba) to Safwa on the eastern coast. The word behind it, safwan, is the ordinary Arabic for smooth bare rock, and it is also a common personal name, so the form on its own locates nothing.

Overview

Al-Safwani (al-Ṣafwānī) is taken as the nisba to Ṣafwā, a settlement of the coastal district of al-Qaṭīf within the shore the geographers call al-Khaṭṭ. The nisba is built on the root ṣ-f-w, and Lisān al-ʿArab gives ṣafwān and ṣafā as the smooth bare stone, with ṣafwāna its single piece — a very ordinary word for very ordinary ground.

An ordinary word

Because ṣafwān is a common noun and, in the same books, a well-attested personal name, a nisba of this shape can arise in more than one way that has nothing to do with this coast: from a forebear called Ṣafwān, from any of the several places elsewhere in the Arabic lands whose names are built on the same root, or from the stony ground itself as a descriptive byname. The form therefore locates nothing on its own. Only a source that names the place or the ancestor tells you which sense produced a given family's name.

On sources

The classical works this reference cites treat the word fully but do not carry Ṣafwā of the al-Qaṭīf coast as an entry. The lexical content above stands on Lisān al-ʿArab; the identification of the place is recorded here without a classical citation, and this page does not construct a history for it.

Bearing the name

A toponymic family name records a place an ancestor was attributed to — born there, settled there, known by it — as the name was applied to him, not a lineage. It attaches to no tribe, and two families bearing it need have no connection to one another beyond the place itself.
