Al-Sanabisi

A family name (nisba) to al-Sanābis on the eastern coast. The classical works this reference cites do not document the place; the same written form also arises from Sanbas, a name the genealogists carry within Ṭayyiʾ.

Overview

Al-Sanabisi (al-Sanābisī) is the nisba to al-Sanābis, a settlement of the al-Qaṭīf district on the shore the geographers call al-Khaṭṭ. The form is a plain toponymic built on a plural shape: Sanābis is the pattern Arabic gives as the plural of a name like Sanbas, and the nisba is taken from the plural as it stands rather than from a singular.

On sources

The classical works this reference is permitted to cite do not carry al-Sanābis. Yāqūt names a good many places on this coast and does not name this one, and no entry in the lexicons plainly belongs to it. This page therefore constructs no history for the name. It records that the nisba is to a place of the al-Qaṭīf district and leaves the rest to sources not available here.

A second route to the same form

The written form is not reached only from the coast. Sanbas is a name the genealogists enter within Ṭayyiʾ, and a nisba built on it, or on its plural, arrives at the same shape from an entirely separate origin. That route has nothing to do with this coast and nothing to do with the settlement, and the two must not be read into one another. Where a family carries the name, only its own record can say which road it came by.

Bearing the name

A toponymic family name records a place an ancestor was attributed to — born there, settled there, known by it — as the name was applied to him, not a lineage. It attaches to no tribe, and two families bearing it need have no connection to one another beyond the place itself.
