Al-Sayhati

A family name (nisba) to Sayhat on the eastern coast. The classical works this reference cites do not document the place, so the page records the name and the country and not a history.

Overview

Al-Sayhati (al-Sayhātī) is the nisba to Sayhāt, a settlement of the coastal district of al-Qaṭīf, within the shore the geographers call al-Khaṭṭ. The form is a plain toponymic: the name of the place with the nisba ending, saying that an ancestor was attributed to it and nothing further.

On sources

The classical works this reference is permitted to cite do not carry Sayhāt. Yāqūt names many places on this coast and does not name this one, and the lexicographers give no entry that plainly belongs to it. This page therefore does not construct a history for the name. It records that the nisba is to a place of the al-Qaṭīf district and leaves the rest to sources that are not available here.

The word

Sayhāt does not resolve cleanly into a root in the classical dictionaries, and no derivation is offered for it here. Readers should be aware that a form ending in -āt can be a plural in Arabic and that names of this shape are sometimes read as such, but that reading is not documented in the permitted sources and is not asserted.

Bearing the name

A toponymic family name records a place an ancestor was attributed to — born there, settled there, known by it — as the name was applied to him, not a lineage. It attaches to no tribe, and two families bearing it need have no connection to one another beyond the place itself.
