Al-Shanni

A family name (nisba) to Shann of Abd al-Qays. The name is also a plain Arabic word — a worn waterskin — and the proverb built on it is among the best known in the language, so the form can arise without any tribal sense.

Overview

Al-Shanni (al-Shannī) is the nisba to Shann, whom the genealogists carry within ʿAbd al-Qays alongside Lukayz, the tribe being reckoned under Rabīʿa and remembered on the eastern coast. As with Lukayz, the nisba to a section is narrower and more informative than al-ʿAbdī, which covers the whole.

The word

Shann is also an ordinary noun. Lisān al-ʿArab gives al-shann as the old, worn waterskin — the same entry carries the proverb wāfaqa shannun ṭabaqa, spoken when two things suit one another exactly, and the lexicographers report more than one explanation of it, some referring it to the skin and its lid and some to a man of the name. That last point matters here: the classical books themselves record the ambiguity between the common noun and the proper name, in the very entry a reader would consult.

Why the form settles nothing on its own

Because shann is everyday vocabulary, a byname built on it is written exactly as the tribal nisba, and there is no way to tell them apart on the page. A family name of al-Shannī is consistent with the section of ʿAbd al-Qays and equally consistent with a descriptive byname or a nisba to a forebear who bore the word as a name. Only a source that says which is meant decides it.

Bearing the name

A tribal nisba records what a family is called, not who its ancestors were. It may follow descent (ṣarīḥ), alliance (ḥilf) or clientage (walāʾ), and only a family's own documented record tells those apart.
