Overview
Al-Shehhi (al-Shiḥḥī) is the nisba of al-Shiḥūḥ, recorded in the mountains of Musandam at the mouth of the Gulf, divided today between Oman and the UAE. The name is built on the singular Shiḥḥī rather than on the plural Shiḥūḥ, the usual pattern for a nisba to a plural tribal name.
Speech and country
Al-Shiḥūḥ are noted for a markedly distinct dialect, and for the terraced mountain agriculture and stone building suited to that hard country. A distinctive dialect records long settlement in one place; it says nothing in itself about descent.
Bearing the name
The nisba records association with a group and its country. It does not by itself establish a line of descent, and families should verify their own documented lineage.
