Overview
Muscat is the capital of Oman, set between mountains and sea on a natural harbour of the Gulf of Oman. The classical geographers mention it among the anchorages of the Omani coast on the India sea route.
History
The port's command of the ocean route gave it a long maritime history — a station for ships bound to India and East Africa, and from the twelfth century AH the seat of Oman's ruling dynasty.
