Al-Tanukhi
A family name (nisba) to Tanūkh — which the sources treat as a confederation rather than a father, so the nisba names an alliance and a settling, not a single line.
- Type
- Nisba to a confederation
- Attributed to
- Tanūkh — Quḍāʿah in the main account, Mālik ibn Fahm of al-Azd in another
- Root
- t-n-kh, to remain or settle in a place
- What the form settles

Overview
Al-Tanukhi (al-Tanūkhī) is the nisba of Tanūkh, a name the classical books do not treat as an ancestor's. They report groups that gathered and settled together in lower ʿIrāq and on the shore of al-Baḥrayn, and took a name from the root t-n-kh, which Lisān al-ʿArab gives as remaining and staying in a place — the sense of the name is the settling itself. The genealogists place Tanūkh under Quḍāʿah in the main account, while another attaches the leading element to Mālik ibn Fahm of al-Azd; the sources differ, and both readings are reported rather than settled. Their remembered country is around al-Ḥīra, and later the north of Syria.
Names easily confused
The confusion here is not with another name but within this one. Because Tanūkh is a confederation, the nisba records membership of a coalition, and a family bearing it is named for a joining, which the classical vocabulary itself would call ḥilf rather than ṣarīḥ descent. It does not identify which of the constituent groups a line belonged to, and it does not settle the disputed attachment: a page calling a Tanūkhī family Quḍāʿī and a page calling it Azdī are reporting the same two accounts the sources already carry.
A further caution: because the name means the settling, it is descriptive, and later writers use Tanūkh of a place and a population as readily as of a genealogy.
Bearing the name
A tribal nisba records what a family is called, not who its ancestors were. It may follow descent (ṣarīḥ), alliance (ḥilf) or clientage (walāʾ), and only a family's own documented record tells those apart.
