Overview
Al-Hūn ibn Khuzayma is recorded as a brother of Kināna, which places the line within Muḍar. Its own name is not the one the sources normally use: the descendants of al-Hūn are called al-Qāra, and it is under that name that they appear in the lexicons and the proverb collections, remembered for their archery in the saying that the Qāra deal fairly with whoever shoots at them. ʿAḍal and al-Dīsh are named among its lines. The practical point for anyone tracing the name is that al-Hūn and al-Qāra are recorded as one group under two labels, and a text using the one will rarely stop to explain the other. This page describes a historical tribe and makes no claim about any modern family.
On lineage
Branch lists and affiliations here are given as reported by the classical genealogists, who themselves disagree. Nothing on this page establishes any living family's descent: a shared name may reflect descent, alliance (ḥilf) or clientage (walāʾ), and the sources usually say which only when they know.
Frequently asked questions
Are al-Hūn and al-Qāra two different groups?
The sources use al-Qāra as the current name for the descendants of al-Hūn ibn Khuzayma, so searching the genealogies under one name and the lexicons under the other turns up the same people, as reported.
