Overview

Banū Dārim are among the best known sections of Banū Tamīm in the genealogical literature. Ibn Ḥazm arranges them as Dārim ibn Mālik ibn Ḥanẓala ibn Mālik ibn Zayd Manāt ibn Tamīm — that is, under Ḥanẓala, and through Tamīm to Muḍar on the ʿAdnānī side of the standard division. Reckoned to Dārim, as the genealogists report it, are Mujāshiʿ, Nahshal and ʿAbd Allāh; from the last the sources trace the house of Zurāra ibn ʿUdus, whose reports include Ḥājib ibn Zurāra and the bow he is said to have pledged with the Persian king, and Laqīṭ ibn Zurāra at the day of Shiʿb Jabala. For the country, Yāqūt places the diyār of Tamīm across the Najd plateau, about al-Ṣammān and the sands of al-Dahnāʾ. This page describes a historical section of a historical tribe and makes no statement about any modern family.

The name

Lisān al-ʿArab gives darima of a man who walks with short, close steps, and adram of a bone that does not protrude. The akhbār explain the name by an occasion of such walking under a load. The lexicon supports the sense of the root; it does not confirm the story, and the two should not be run together.

On lineage

Branch lists and affiliations here are given as reported by the classical genealogists, who themselves disagree. Nothing on this page establishes any living family's descent: a shared name may reflect descent (ṣarīḥ), alliance (ḥilf) or clientage (walāʾ), and the sources usually say which only when they know.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the genealogists place Banū Dārim?

Under Ḥanẓala of Banū Tamīm, and through Tamīm to Muḍar — as they report it. The arrangement is a scholarly ordering of transmitted material, not a register.
