Overview

Al-Zāra is one of the places on this coast that Yāqūt describes rather than merely lists. He enters it as a large village of al-Baḥrayn, with abundant palms, and reports that a Persian garrison was posted there in the time before Islam — this shore faced across the Gulf, and the geographers treat it as a frontier as much as a farmland. The tribe the genealogists place on the coast around it is ʿAbd al-Qays, whose dwellings both Ibn Ḥazm and the geographers set in this country.

The name

Ibn Manẓūr enters *al-zāra* under z-w-r for a great gathering — of people, of camels, of sheep — a crowd large enough to be seen as a mass. The word is ordinary, which is the first thing to know about the name: it describes an assembly, not a feature of this particular ground, and nothing follows from it about the place beyond that Arabs used a common word for it.

More than one Zāra

Yāqūt's dictionary carries more than one al-Zāra, in more than one country, and they are told apart only by what he gives alongside the name. The Zāra of this coast is the one entered with al-Baḥrayn; a bare mention of al-Zāra in a source, with no country beside it, does not place a man here. This is worth saying plainly, because a name that occurs in several regions is one of the commonest ways a family history goes wrong.

Frequently asked questions

If a source says a man was min al-Zāra, is he from this coast?

Not necessarily. Yāqūt records more than one place of the name, in different countries, distinguished only by what he gives beside it. Without a country named alongside, the word does not locate anyone.
