Al-Zari

A family name (nisba) to al-Zāra, a village of this coast that Yāqūt does describe — palms, and a garrison posted there before Islam. More than one place carries the name, so the nisba does not fix a district on its own.

Overview

Al-Zari (al-Zārī) is the nisba to al-Zāra. Unlike most of the village names of this coast, this one is documented: Yāqūt enters al-Zāra as a large village of al-Baḥrayn, with palms, and records that a garrison was posted there in the time before Islam. A nisba to a place the geographers actually describe is on firmer ground than the ordinary village nisba, and older texts carrying al-Zārī may genuinely be pointing at this village.

More than one place of the name

That said, the name is not unique to this coast. Yāqūt records al-Zāra of more than one country, and the nisba built on any of them is written the same. So the form does not by itself put a man on the seaboard of al-Baḥrayn; the text has to say so, or the context has to.

The form and the word

The nisba to a place ending in the feminine tāʾ drops it, so al-Zāra yields al-Zārī, which is regular. Under the root, Lisān al-ʿArab gives senses for zāra and its family — among them a large gathering of people or of camels — but the lexicographers do not tie any of these to the village, and no derivation is claimed for it here. Readers should also keep al-Zārī apart from names built on z-r-ʿ, sowing, which are a different root and a different word.

Bearing the name

A toponymic family name records a place an ancestor was attributed to — born there, settled there, known by it — as the name was applied to him, not a lineage. It attaches to no tribe, and two families bearing it need have no connection to one another beyond the place itself.
