Overview
Al-Asadi (al-Asadī) is the nisba of Asad, and the classical books attach the one written form to several distinct forebears of the name. The Asad usually meant in the northern scheme is Asad ibn Khuzayma ibn Mudrika, reckoned by the genealogists to Muḍar and brother in the ordering to Kināna, with a remembered range in Najd and the northern approaches of the Hijaz. The root ʾ-s-d is in Lisān al-ʿArab the lion and what is said of it, and Asad stands equally as a plain personal name, so the form is built as readily on a near forebear as on a tribe.
Names easily confused
This nisba is the sharpest case in its group, because at least three unrelated routes end at the same spelling and the sources keep them apart. Asad ibn Khuzayma is the Muḍarī tribe. Asad ibn ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā ibn Quṣayy is a clan of Quraysh — a different Asad entirely, which in the classical ordering meets the first only many generations above, at Khuzayma; to read one for the other moves a family across two separate tiers of the scheme, and a register that merges them is making a real genealogical error and not a spelling slip. Banū Asad groups are recorded elsewhere again and yield the same nisba from lines of their own. Beyond all of these, Asad is an ordinary name, and a nisba built on any forebear who bore it carries no tribal sense at all. The form on its own therefore settles nothing; only a source that names the Asad meant does.
Bearing the name
A tribal nisba records what a family is called, not who its ancestors were. It may follow descent (ṣarīḥ), alliance (ḥilf) or clientage (walāʾ), and only a family's own documented record tells those apart.
