Overview

Nizwā lies inland from Muscat at the foot of the Jabal al-Akhḍar, watered by the *aflāj* — the underground channel system that has irrigated Omani oases for millennia and is itself a World Heritage listing.

Standing

Nizwā was the seat of Oman's interior and long its centre of religious learning, distinct in character from the coast: where Muscat looked outward to the sea and its trade, Nizwā was the settled agricultural and scholarly interior.

Known for

Its fort and market, and a metalworking tradition — the Omani *khanjar* above all — that is still practised.
