Overview

The first thing this page has to do is separate two large groups called Bakr. Bakr ibn Wāʾil is reckoned to Rabīʿa and recorded in the north-east of the peninsula; Bakr ibn ʿAbd Manāt ibn Kināna is reckoned to Muḍar and recorded in the Hijaz. The genealogists refer them to entirely different lines, and a source that says only Bakr has not said which one it means — a bare nisba of al-Bakrī tells a reader less than it appears to. Under Bakr ibn ʿAbd Manāt the sources most often name Ḍamra, Layth and al-Duʾil, with Ghifār reckoned through Ḍamra; and it is this Bakr, not the other, that the historical narratives name in the quarrel with Khuzāʿah immediately before the conquest of Mecca. This page describes a historical tribe and makes no claim about any modern family.

On lineage

Branch lists and affiliations here are given as reported by the classical genealogists, who themselves disagree. Nothing on this page establishes any living family's descent: a shared name may reflect descent, alliance (ḥilf) or clientage (walāʾ), and the sources usually say which only when they know.

Frequently asked questions

How do I tell which Bakr a source means?

By the line and the region. Bakr ibn Wāʾil is reckoned to Rabīʿa and recorded in the north-east; Bakr ibn ʿAbd Manāt is reckoned to Kināna and Muḍar and recorded in the Hijaz. Where a text gives neither, the name alone does not settle it.
