Overview
Muzayna is reckoned to Muḍar through Ṭābikha ibn Ilyās, and the genealogists record something about its name that has few parallels: they give Muzayna as the name of the mother rather than the father. They name her a woman of Kalb — a line they reckon in Quḍāʿah — and report that the descendants of ʿUthmān and Aws, the sons of ʿAmr ibn Udd, came to be known by her, so that her name prevailed over theirs. Its diyār are recorded in the Hijaz, on the roads around Medina and in the country between the town and the coast. As a word, muzna in Lisān al-ʿArab is the white raincloud, though the genealogists take the tribal name from the woman and not from the word. This page describes a historical tribe and makes no claim about any modern family.
On lineage
Branch lists and affiliations here are given as reported by the classical genealogists, who themselves disagree. Nothing on this page establishes any living family's descent: a shared name may reflect descent, alliance (ḥilf) or clientage (walāʾ), and the sources usually say which only when they know.
Frequently asked questions
Is Muzayna really named after a woman?
That is how the genealogists report it: they name her a woman of Kalb whose name prevailed over the descendants of ʿUthmān and Aws, the sons of ʿAmr ibn Udd. A small number of Arab tribes are recorded this way, and it is given here as the sources give it, not as a settled fact.
