ʿUmān (Oman, the region)

The southeastern corner of Arabia as the classical geographers describe it — from Musandam to the borders of Mahra, wider than the modern state, and not the same name as ʿAmmān of the Balqāʾ.

The name

The geographers vowel it ʿUmān, with a ḍamma on the ʿayn and a single mīm, and Yāqūt is careful to keep it apart from ʿAmmān of the Balqāʾ, which has a fatḥa and a doubled mīm. The two are still confused in modern writing. The lexicographers connect the name to the root ʿ-m-n and the sense of staying put — ʿamana bi-l-makān, to settle in a place and not move on — and also report it from an eponym, as they habitually do for very old names.

Extent in the sources

In the classical descriptions ʿUmān is the whole southeastern corner of the Peninsula: from Ruʾūs al-Jibāl at Musandam, down the Bāṭinah coast, over the Ḥajar mountains to the towns of the interior, west into the sands toward the Rubʿ al-Khālī, and south toward Mahra and Ḥaḍramawt. Among its districts the sources name Tuwām, which later writers identify with the oases of al-ʿAyn and al-Buraymī. The region as the sources draw it is therefore wider than the modern state of the same name.

In genealogy

ʿUmān is named constantly as diyār. The classical accounts place al-Azd there, al-Durūʿ and al-Ḥarāsīs in the interior deserts, al-Shiḥūḥ at Musandam, and the country of al-Mahrah borders it on the south. These are associations of place, with no lineage claim attached. The geographies also keep the region's oldest internal division: the coast at Muscat turned outward to the sea, the interior at Nizwā settled and farming behind the mountains.

Frequently asked questions

Is ʿUmān the same word as ʿAmmān?

No. Yāqūt separates them: ʿUmān, with a ḍamma and a single mīm, is the region of southeastern Arabia; ʿAmmān, with a fatḥa and a doubled mīm, is the town of the Balqāʾ.
